Database representation has a much simpler syntax than function set network representation, but it has the same format structure. As Two explained, as the designing of an actual system unfolds, just as classes can be seen to simply define complex (compound) data types and how they are processed, class designing can be seen to simply be the databasing of functions. There are many similarities between class designing and standard database designing; there s a common feel, especially for relational databases, because they dynamically link tables, with one having the parameters for another. (This view is reinforced by the capability of embedded SQL, with which tables also store the code for common functions.) Basically, in both types of designing, the combinations of similarities and differences define how entities can be shared. But, again, function orientation has added complexity; function databasing can be seen as an inheritance of standard databasing, with more factors to balance. Sharing needs determine whether all of the items of a set should go into one table or a group (a team) of tables item subsets. And, as in any type of designing, there are always balances of consideration of space versus time; an extension of this, for function orientation, is the consideration of static versus dynamic entities. And at interaction algebra s level of structure, more similarities between class designing and standard database designing become evident, and more understanding of each arises.

Using them is very similar to using the non-generic forms. The class implementing IEnumerator implements property Current, which returns a reference of type object, which you must then cast to the actual type of the object. With the generic interface form The GetEnumerator method of interface IEnumerable<T> returns an enumerator class instance that implements IEnumerator<T>. The class implementing IEnumerator<T> implements property Current, which returns an object of the actual type, rather than a reference to the base class object. An important point to notice is that the non-generic interface implementations are not type-safe. They return references to type object, which must then be cast to the actual types. With the generic interfaces, however, the enumerator is type-safe, returning references to the actual types.

CHAPTER 6 EXTENSIBLE MARKUP LANGUAGE (XML)

The IEnumerator<T> interface uses generics to return an actual derived type, rather than an object of type object. The IEnumerator<T> interface derives from two other interfaces: the non-generic IEnumerator interface and the IDisposable interface. It must therefore implement their members. You have already seen the non-generic IEnumerator interface and its three members. The IDisposable interface has a single, void, parameterless method called Dispose, which can be used to free unmanaged resources being held by the class. (The Dispose method was described in 6.) The IEnumerator<T> interface itself has a single method, Current, which returns an item of a derived type not an item of type object. Since both IEnumerator<T> and IEnumerator have a member named Current, you should explicitly implement the IEnumerator version, and implement the generic version in the class itself, as shown in Figure 20-6.
