If a delegate has a return value and more than one method in its invocation list, the following occurs: The value returned by the last method in the invocation list is the value returned from the delegate invocation. The return values from all the other methods in the invocation list are ignored. For example, the following code declares a delegate that returns an int value. Main creates an object of the delegate and adds two additional methods. It then calls the delegate in the WriteLine statement and prints its return value. CHAPTER 6 EXTENSIBLE MARKUP LANGUAGE (XML)

Some storage server software has been extended to include serving XML. Taking a step back, it s fairly easy to see that the XML tagged-data design is data mixed with metadata, for every instance of the data. It s specifically designed to directly interpret data through a text transfer protocol that has no infrastructure for that. It eliminates the need for extra references (to metadata), for each instance of interpretation of the data. Outside of that purpose, other configurations are more practical. Especially, XML is efficiently hand-coded for only very low counts of instances; for higher counts to be handled well, XML needs the additional capabilities of processing tags separated from data and applying a single set of those tags to multiple instances of data. Independently, compared with a relational database of each level of a data structure placed in a separate table XML is data in its extracted form, a logical cross view that combines (joins) the tables appropriately. Extracted data has repetitions of the same instance of one level referenced by multiple instances of another level. It, therefore, is significantly larger than the separated form and can require repetition to make a single change which also makes data integrity more difficult to maintain. These are the reasons for the database configuration in the first place.

If a delegate has a reference parameter, the value of the parameter can change upon return from one or more of the methods in the invocation list. When calling the next method in the invocation list, the new value of the parameter not the initial value is the one passed to the next method. For example, the following code invokes a delegate with a reference parameter. So far, you ve seen that you can use either static methods or instance methods to instantiate a delegate. In either case, the method itself can be called explicitly from other parts of the code, and, of course, must be a member of some class or struct. What if, however, the method is used only one time to instantiate the delegate In that case, other than the syntactic requirement for creating the delegate, there is no real need for a separate, named method. Anonymous methods allow you to dispense with the separate, named method. An anonymous method is a method that is declared inline, at the point of instantiating a delegate. For example, Figure 15-11 shows two versions of the same class. The version on the left declares and uses a method named Add20. The version on the right uses an anonymous method instead. The nonshaded code of both versions is identical.

Just for perspective, XML can most efficiently be applied to represent tables with additional tags for generic table structures for column properties if these are the only structures in the representation. In many cases, though, all of the structures must be read for any single data item to be reliably interpreted, so it couldn t be directly parsed. This indicates that the only real use for this configuration is temporary conversion from one database to another.
