This mapping of file extensions to mime types is all well and good, but it doesn t really support tasks you want to do with your typical desktop files, like printing PDFs or opening OpenOffice documents. That s where Mustang adds something new: the Desktop class, found in the java.awt package. The Desktop class has an enumeration of actions that may be supported for a file or URI: BROWSE, EDIT, MAIL, OPEN, and PRINT. Yes, I really did say that you can print a PDF file from your Java program. It works, provided you have Acrobat (or an appropriate reader) installed on your system. The Desktop class does not manage the registry of mime types to applications. Instead, it relies on the platform-dependent registry mapping of mime type and action to application. This is different from what the Activation Framework utilizes. You get access to the native desktop by calling the aptly named getDesktop() method of Desktop. On headless systems, a HeadlessException will be thrown. Where the operation isn t supported, an UnsupportedOperationException is thrown. To avoid the former exception, you can use the isHeadless() method to ask the GraphicsEnvironment if it is headless. To avoid the latter, you can use the isDesktopSupported() method to ask the Desktop class if it is supported before trying to acquire it.

The non-simple predefined types are somewhat more complex. Values of type string contain zero or more Unicode characters. Besides the 15 predefined types provide by C#, you can also create your own user-defined types. There are six kinds of types you can create. They are the following: class types struct types array types enum types delegate types interface types Types are created using a type declaration, which includes the following information: The kind of type you are creating The name of the new type A declaration (name and specification) of each of the type s members except for array and delegate types, which do not have named members Once you have declared a type, you can create and use objects of the type just as if they were predefined types. Figure 3-5 summarizes the use of predefined and user-defined types. Using predefined types is a one-step process in which you simply instantiate the objects. Using user-defined types is a two-step process. You first declare the type and then instantiate objects of the type.

Function-oriented thinking sees application-oriented thinking as fragmenting logical sets of functions and, additionally, unnecessarily duplicating many of those fragments. Without the duplication of fragments, each function data and processing is owned by a set; other sets must interact with that set to use the function. Developers must know what parameters each function requires and what all of its external effects are; but this has always been true of utilities. (And, actually, the best designs separate any side effect into its own function, allowing selective combination.) The most organized function-oriented approach is to have a database of the functions with uses and is used by references as part of an integrated development environment (IDE). These added efforts allow each logical function to occur physically only once, so changes are centralized and distributed by the computer; ongoing development is facilitated, so the added efforts are an investment in the future.
